CORNISH COUNTY SMITE! CHAMPS 2010
More than sixty smiters competed for the Cornish title at Calstock on May Bank Holiday Monday, on a blessedly sunny afternoon. Thanks to all the loyalists for coming, including a team from Truro and beyond. We always seem to have tournaments in some of Cornwall's loveliest locations, and Calstock always makes us welcome.
After closely fought rounds the final came down to Kate Lewis and Tom Reid, and Katie Fierek and Adam Mcpherson- both pairs coming from the "Winner Winner" team from St Annes Chapel. After a classy final, eventual winners were Kate and Tom...Adam seems to be the "nearly man" of Smite, and is still trying to forget his misses in last year's World Doubles final- still, luckily there are plenty of us around to remind him!!
Thanks to all who contributed to a great atmosphere.all proceeds - £100 went to Shelterbox.
See photo gallery for pics.

During the day we'll also hold the Junior Doubles- open to Primary School aged Children. This will probably be either side of the lunch break

Can Clare retain her title???!!
Will Dan Thompson or Andy Cooke come back in their lust for glory!!?
Will the invaders from the north come down and fight for their Doubles title???- Hope so
We're looking forward to seeing all our old Smite! friends- and to welcome some new ones..
All smiters are welcome whatever they think of their ability!! and with an entry fee of £1 per event per person,(supporters free of course!) and all the money going to charity, it's a great value day
Just one more notice:: Two keen smiters - Carole and Pete Perry- run a lovely camping site near St Neot. It's great value and they would welcome anybody from the tournament. If the weather forecast is good- why not make a weekend of it!??

Smite World Championships 2009
Just when you think Cornwall will never see another dry day, it turns out nice again for the World Smite! Champs. Every year the number of entries increases, and with the new "all day" format this again proved to be the case.
86 smiters entered for the Singles, and - I know I say this every year but it's true! - the standard gets higher and higher..Reigning champ Andy Cooke returned to defend his title but found the outside courts too tricky. After the group stages, quarter finals and semis, we were left with a final between Claire "Little Ant" Rowswell, smiting out of Truro smite club, and Tavistock's Josh "The Hat" Sutton. With top smiting, Claire overcame Josh in a tense final watched by more than 150 knowledgeable spectators. Claire is the first woman ever to win , and brings the World title back to Cornwall!
One innovation this year was a BBQ break with live music. Soul singer Steph Newton was sensational and entertained the crowd royally.
Doubles entries once again filled all fifteen courts, and with last year's winner Paul Balfour now smiting in New Zealand, the event was wide open.
Local smiters did well in the early stages with Calstock smiters Matt and Adam looking invincible all the way through to the final. However their final opponents- the pairing of Victoria Cooke, and the man known simply in smiting circles as "Graeme" who had come down from Derby and Shrewsbury prevailed in a top quality final. Matt and Adam had two shots at no. 8 to take the title but their nerve failed them!
Graeme and Tors were worthy winners ..and congratulations to them.
The childrens doubles event was taken by the Cornish pairing of Ben Hoskins and Jacob Kevern, with Aiden and Aimee Smith (Zimbabwe) being runners - up.
Thanks as always to all the people who made the effort to come and support the event, and thanks to everyone too for continuing to spread the smite word.
Thanks to Steph and Bubs for the music.
Thanks as always to Bevil and Marjorie for the mighty BBQ
Commiserations to Margaret Cole for the sunburnt legs!
£444 was raised for the St Neot Village project....Cheers Smiters hope to see you all next year!...Roger and Sue
Congratulations to Mike Hughes of Saltash and Syd Copson of Calstock for becoming Cornish Smite Champions 2009!!
Over 50 smiters competed on Calstock's lovely village green beside the Tamar, and the smiting was of terrific quality.Mike has been to every Smite championships we have ever held, so this was a true reward for loyalty!! Well done Mike and Syd and thanks to all who supported the event. See the gallery page for photos...All proceeds went to The Greenbank Christian Centre for their work in the Phillipines.
Smite reviews...
Thanks to ITV's "This Morning" who gave Smite a ringing endorsement. "Now this is something really special" and Philip Schofield's comment "We like a game called Smite!"
Thanks too to BBC Radio Cornwall who have again featured Smite, and Cornwall Today magazine who's article led to a massive boost in Smite sales over Christmas.
Smite received an enthusiastic endorsement in the June 24th edition of The Times Educational Supplement. In an article headlined "Love at first Smite". It concludes that Smite is
"a game that can add fun, novelty and educational value to any school that is looking for a new way to engage pupils"
Recognising its potential as a mathematical tool the article calls Smite
"The game you can count on!"
Thanks to Cornwall Today who gave us a fantastic five page spread before Christmas. We had literally hundreds of enquiries and orders, mainly from ex-pat Cornish from all over U.K.
